I am passionate about bringing the practices of Yoga and Mindfulness to schools in WA.
Being a primary teacher myself, I understand the need for teaching these tools to children to support their wellbeing. Schools are busy places to be; with children being in and among the energy of many little personalities in the room. They are often met with various demands and expectations on a daily basis and sometimes this can be overwhelming.
Threading tools for wellbeing throughout the school day in an authentic and simple way can be so effective in giving children brain breaks; conscious pauses to take a big deep breath, refocus and continue on with their day. These practices can also support the development of emotional literacy and self regulation.
I believe that my role is to plant a seed. Simply plant the seed of these tools in the minds of children. Perhaps they won't come to need them until later in life but how wonderful to have given them a bank of tools to draw upon to manage the inevitable challenges that come their way.
Of course, it isn't just children who experience stress and overwhelm in the midst of busy school days, weeks and terms. Teachers need these tools too. In my experience, when I called upon these tools to support my own wellbeing and brought them into my classroom, the children became curious and eventually asked to practise Yoga and Mindfulness on a daily basis! I really believe that wellbeing practices will embed organically when they are delivered authentically and teachers begin to prioritise their wellbeing and practise themselves!
